We visit Nara which is about a 45 minute train ride from Kyoto. Nara is a fascinating city with much to see. We saw Todaiji (the "Great Eastern Temple"), lots of free roaming tame deer, the oldest house in Nara, and had a great Japanese meal. Thanks to our two Nara guides for helping us get around.
